Robert Pershing Wadlow, the tallest ever

Robert Pershing Wadlow, born on the 22 of February, 1918 and died on 15 of July, 1940, was a man who, to this day, is the tallest person in medical history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. He is often known as the “Alton Giant” because of his hometown – Alton, Illinois.






Wadlow reached 8 feet 11.1 inches (2.72 m)[1][2] in height and weighed 490 pounds (220 kg) at his death. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood was due to hypertrophy of his pituitary gland which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone. He showed no indication of an end to his growth even at the time of his death

  5. Poor man… I can’t imagine having people run to look at me; not only would he be inhibited by his medical problems, but by the public. He was also such a young man, he didn’t have much of a chance back then. Actually breaks my heart. I’ve known about him for awhile, and every time I revisit his story, it makes me very sad.
